Highlights from 2008 National Symposium

The 2008 Liberty Education Forum National Symposium attracted more than 200 allies, friends, and grassroots activists.  The April 12th event in San Diego featured speeches, film screenings and panel discussions on issues impacting gay and lesbian Americans, including the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy, HIV/AIDS, faith and sexual orientation, and the origins of human sexual orientation.  Some highlights:

  • Dr. Dean Hamer, one of America’s leading geneticists, discussed recent findings and evidence that people do not choose their sexual orientation.
  • Former Marine Staff Sergeant Eric Alva, the first American wounded in the Iraq War, shared his personal story of serving under the harmful “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy and spoke about efforts to overturn the ban on openly gay and lesbian service members.
  • Dr. David Reznik spoke about the work Liberty Education Forum has been doing on HIV/AIDS policy.  His remarks included an important presentation on the state of the epidemic today, as well as updates on recent medical breakthroughs.
  • LEF screened the groundbreaking documentary, “For the Bible Tells Me So,” and followed that up with a panel discussion including the film’s director, Daniel Karslake, and four of the stars, Bob and Mary Lou Wallner, and Randi and Phil Reitan.  “For the Bible Tells Me So” is a powerful film exploring Christian attitudes toward homosexuality.
